The “summer slide” is an area of added emphasis in the literacy community. Research shows that
children who do not read over the summer will lose up to three months of reading level. And this
fact is even more prevalent in low to moderate income children; by the end of fifth grade, children
who lose reading skills over the summer can end up three years behind their classmates.
AR Kids Read will be addressing this need as we pilot a summer reading program at the
Dalton Whetstone Boys and Girls Club. Using the Reading is Fundamental multicultural reading
curriculum, the eight week program will make reading interactive and fun using activities to enhance
learning. The success of the program in other states shows that not only do children maintain their
reading level during the summer, but some children actually improve during the summer.
We are excited about the launch of this program, and YOU can help! Tutors are needed to supervise
and provide tutoring to reading small groups that includes students from first through fifth grades.
The tutors will have the opportunity to work with a larger group of students, and will provide support
for activities done by students each day. The program runs from June 15th to August 7th and will be
held every day from 10:30-11:30. You can sign up for one day, one week, or every session!
Contact Matthew DeSalvo, firstname.lastname@example.org, if you are interested in volunteering as a tutor
for this program. We thank you for your commitment to serving struggling readers in Central Arkansas,
and hope you will consider joining us this summer.
