On October 6th, approximately 85 tutors, school contacts, and district administrators gathered at UALR
for a lunch and learn in preparation for the AR Kids Read 2015-2016 year. Dr. Linda Dorn presented the
workshop, “What Works in Tutoring Struggling Readers: Research to Practice”, which provided insightful
information, video examples, and generated meaningful discussions on volume reading, fluency, problem
solving, vocabulary, and comprehension. Dr. Dorn is the Professor of the Reading Center for Literacy
at UALR where she coordinates the Educational Specialist, Doctoral, and Graduate Certificate in
The workshop provided not only valuable tools to support tutors but also an opportunity to network with
others involved with AR Kids Read. Special thanks to Legacy Termite and Pest Control, Inc. and the
Heflin family for providing lunch at this workshop and all future workshops this year.
We value all comments and suggestions to assist us as we prepare for upcoming workshops and
continue to strengthen AR Kids Read in our current schools. Together, we can make a difference in the
lives of families in our community, one child at a time. Stay tuned to our website for a page dedicated
to this wonderful workshop.
