AR Kids Read in final weeks of tutor recruitment – over 350 signed up and more tutors needed

AR Kids Read tutors are being trained and will begin tutoring in over 40 elementary schools in the
three Pulaski County school districts.  Over 350 tutors have registered to serve one hour a week
helping second and third graders read at grade level.  “AR Kids Read Partner organizations are the
key,” said Executive Director Charlie Conklin.  “Our best recruitment tool is our Partners as they
support this community-led effort at their leadership levels.  AR Kids Read provides the way to connect
the volunteers with the vast need of the children.”

With almost 40% of central Arkansas fourth graders reading below grade level, there are 1,500 students
per grade who are struggling readers.  The economic and social impact is huge as over 65% of students
reading below grade level drop out before graduation, have difficulty finding jobs and are at risk for prison.
Third grade reading proficiency is key as a child from birth to third grade “learns to read” and from third
grade on “reads to learn.”

“With hundreds of tutors committed we will help many,” states Traci Wheelis, Operations Manager.
“Unfortunately we have hundreds of tutor opportunities still to fill, many in schools that need the most help.”
A love of reading, a heart for kids and an hour a week can help change a child’s life for the better.

Volunteer opportunities are available at 45 elementary schools in Central Arkansas at varying times
throughout the week. Volunteers simply select the school, day, and time that best fits their schedule.
