The AR Kids Read tutoring program at Murrell Taylor began in February. Taylor had a need for volunteers
to tutor their struggling readers. Taylor was in need of a partner to provide caring adults to tutor their
struggling readers. Who would answer the call?
Thanks to the efforts of First Electric Cooperative of Jacksonville, there are now 14 tutors at Murrell Taylor
tutoring struggling readers. Tonya Sexton, First Electric Cooperative Vice President of Marketing and
Communications, met with AR Kids Read staff and within two weeks, 14 tutors from First Electric were
recruited, trained, and began tutoring at Murrell Taylor.
This wonderful partnership is a prime example of community engagement and the impact volunteers can
have on their community. First Electric Cooperative of Jacksonville is passionate about helping students
in their local community, and Murrell Taylor is the beneficiary of that passion.
One First Electric tutor said, “I love seeing them engage with the stories by guessing what will happen
next or commenting on a character’s actions. [My student] told me Tuesdays (when we work together)
are his favorite, and that made my day.”
Darla Clark, Murrell Taylor Literacy Facilitator, added, “We are excited to be partnered with AR Kids Read
and First Electric. The tutors are making a big impact on our students, and we are thankful for that.”
We are thrilled by the commitment First Electric Cooperative of Jacksonville has made to students at
Murrell Taylor. This partnership directly impacts students’ reading skills through a caring relationship, and
we are thankful for the 14 First Electric tutors that are serving there.
